America's huddled arse

Armando Iannucci does the new clothes thing with Barack Obama’s rhetoric:

…rhythmically, it's quite alluring. It can make anything, even, for example, a simple chair, seem magnificent. Why vote for someone who says: 'See that chair. You can sit on it' when you can have someone like Obama say: 'This chair can take your weight. This chair can hold your buttocks, 15 inches in the air. This chair, this wooden chair, can support the ass of the white man or the crack of the black man, take the downward pressure of a Jewish girl's behind or the butt of a Buddhist adolescent, it can provide comfort for Muslim buns or Mormon backsides, the withered rump of an unemployed man in Nevada struggling to get his kids through high school and needful of a place to sit and think, the plump can of a single mum in Florida desperately struggling to make ends meet but who can no longer face standing, this chair, made from wood felled from the tallest redwood in Chicago, this chair, if only we believed in it, could sustain America's huddled arse.'

True. He is a stupendous bullshitter. Not that I’m a fan of Hillary. John Edwards sounds the best of the credibles, but he slides off the consciousness. Just the usual gang of idiots then. But isn’t that the actual appeal of the Democratic field this year – that they’re just the usual gang of idiots?

All too true. But after the last eight years, wouldn't you rather have a practiced A1 bullshitter in the White House than someone who gives every impression of meaning every word he says? At least with a bullshitter you know he knows he's a bullshitter. If that makes sense.

I think they're a little better than the last lot of candidates, though if Clinton gets it she'll be even worse than the last actual winner.

I'm still trying to get over Sidney Blumenthal characterising Kerry's embarrassing acceptance speech as one of the great acts of political oratory. You think Barack can do bullshit?

It will be nice to have someone who can speak English as our president.
