Your prediction reminds me of the thought I had when I read Max Hastings' (surprisingly good) memoirs of his time as Daily Telegraph editor. Towards the end, he notes that since while he was in a position to be useful to politicians and powerful people they couldn't get enough of lunches with him. Now he's a private citizen, only a very few stay in touch. He then went onto note how many journalists of his acquaintance have died in drink-sodden genteel poverty. I couldn't help draw the comparison to the similar life path of high-class courtesans...
