Obviously, Daily Mail stories online are designed as clickbait. But this one is a dead straight exposition of contemporary government psychosis. Spineless capitalists are giving in to tightly knit groups of sinister leftists. The BBC is actually asking government ministers if they can’t see why people might object to mandatory labour for no money. Mimsy old mumsnet has been driven along in the radical frenzy. The police are being ordered to stop demonstrations before they actually happen.
Yes, indeed. Wreckers and saboteurs are at work. False consciousness stalks the land. The relevant economic organs are resistant to co-ordination. Media is failing to follow the line set by the Centre. The plan is in danger of being underfulfilled. The people’s security forces must act without delay. Maybe this is why the government is so fixated on the SWP. If you’re doing parody Stalinism, everybody looks like a comedy Trotskyist.
Just you wait - they'll be putting sugar in our diesel and ground glass in our sausages in no time.
If only there was some place we could put these people, where society could be safe from their malcontent. Perhaps some kind of big prison, somewhere really cold.

According to Niall Ferguson, that's Scotland.

Lots of space, and plenty of cold, here in Canada...

Actually that thread on mumsnet sounds quite mild compared to some of the other posts. The ones on school "choice" and Gove for example. The threads on the cuts were quite interesting as well. Not quite as milquetoast

Not sure we need travel quite so far back or quite so far afield to get the right historical parallel. For me, all this has the ring of ,"...the tight knit group of politically motivated men" one H.Wilson complained of, back in the mid 1960s. A sinister sounding group that included 2 Jags Prescott of course - I'm hoping there's a future Deputy Prime Minster being press-ganged into stacking shelves for benefits even as I type...

...or of Thatcher's 'the enemy within' circa the miners' strike. Even though the Tories like to claim 'socialism lost' after 1989, it's interesting to note that they still keep a left-wing gimp in the basement for occasions such as these.
