At the end of that war in 2006, I felt the cost of that more than I ever had. My marriage had fallen apart, I was away from my daughter, and I really didn't have a sense of having a home. And that was what was so important about being in Marjayoun and rebuilding the home. At its most elemental, it was about trying to find home, and in the end, I did.
From a very recent interview with the late Anthony Shadid, probably the best pure reporter of the 9/11 wars. Obituary here, along with an archive of his stories.
That's just terrible news. I saw very moving interview not too long ago with him talking about rebuilding his family's home in Lebanon. I can't seem to find it now though, (I thought it was on Charlie Rose but apparently not).

Radio Open Source? did an interview on it with him a couple of years back.

One of those tricks of memory I think, I believe I'd read an excerpt from his book, maybe even that interview that Jamie linked above, a few weeks ago and that combined with another recent memory of seeing him on Charlie Rose and/or Democracy Now! talking about Libya or Syria or one of the many other Middle Eastern hot spots he's reported from where it's been kicking off lately.
