OK, an update on last Friday’s big blogger straightener in Beijing. Bloomberg view has a good roundup here and Roland Soong does his usual comprehensive translation job from the initial challenges to the encounter and finally the responses.
I note in passing that we never had anything like that, even in the late and largely unlamented heyday of warblogging, and I’m still not sure what to make of it except that it brings to mind the old saying about wrestling with pigs. On the other hand, it has to be said that the transition to the micoblogging format doesn’t seem to have done much for the intellectual coherence of China’s opposition. And maybe its time to move a bit beyond the '50 cent' dismissal and look at people like Wu as part of a mature reactionary tendency worth taking seriously in its own right.
