Jake Adelstein (whose Tokyo Vice is well worth a read) has a solid piece up on the Yakuza's relationship with Japan's ruling DPJ. I don't follow Japanese politics closely, but I'd kind of assumed it was the LDP that was supposed to be the mobbed up monolith, on a par with the old Italian Christian democrats, and the DPJ was supposed to offer a tragicomic interlude of honest, earnest but ineffectual government before the Japanese Berlusconi came along, with hilarious consequences.
Elsewhere, the current Japanese PM seems to have taken to the bottle.
