I greatly enjoyed this.
As a writer I worked out that one of the things he did was actually draw up a page index, and then, by plotting each subject, made sure they filled up all the actual pages. How far into the process did he do this? Is it actually a true representation of pages or are some or many never filled. I can't be bothered to work it out.
But at least in those days they only had one establishment monster on the loose. Now we have thousands. They come at you like creatures in a shoot-em-up computer game.
