Most of the people responsible those achievements got purged, so by the time of 1979, it was back to pointy sticks and chamberbots at the Viets. Getting out from under the thumb of the Party, and being a proper military is more than just about recognition of past glory. Much of that lack of recognition is explicitly about the politics of admitting Peng Dehuai wuz RIGHT!!

I did buy this (oh the shame) on the Kindle last night. I think I might have to take its analysis with a pinch of salt when it describes the Sino-Vietnamese war as 'achieving its strategic objectives and overwhelming stiff Vietnamese resistance'.
