General Liu tells a news conference, “[War] is just not on, in future we should just defer, discuss and coordinate, it’s not worth resorting to humanity’s most extreme and violent methods to resolve it.” He even admonishes one young reporter directly: “A kid like you would not know what war is, it’s actually very cruel, and the costs are great.”
Ten years on from Iraq it's kind of heartening to hear a PLA general with strong links to the current Chinese leadership pulling hard against the prospect of another hubris-driven, insanely destructive conflict, this time between two of the world's major economic powers. Iraq isn't mentioned, except in the context of the 'strategic deception' some in China believe that the US used to entice Iraq to invade Kuwait and trigger the first Gulf War. But who knows? Maybe somebody learned something.
