They strike again:
Eight British soldiers killed during ambushes in Iraq were the victims of a highly sophisticated bomb first used by the IRA, The Independent on Sunday can reveal. The soldiers, who were targeted by insurgents as they travelled through the country, died after being attacked with bombs triggered by infra-red beams. The bombs were developed by the IRA using technology passed on by the security services in a botched "sting" operation more than a decade ago.
The article goes on to suggest that this, rather than Iran is the source of the shaped IED charges used in the British zone.
But identifying anyone as a particular source of technology like this is pointless, except for the purposes of political convenience. Once made known, that knowledge is out there for anybody to pick up. A couple of cases in point. Here’s a Kurdish guerilla website lecturing its readers on fourth generation warfare. Who’s going to take an interest in this kind of material? Chechens, Balochis, Iraqi insurgents, conceivably people from FARC or a South American indigenous militant group. And here’s a Jamestown report about Islamist internet forums on network security.
Formerly used chiefly as a platform for al-Qaeda statements and claims of responsibility for attacks by numerous groups, these forums have become a grassroots medium through which individuals without any particular group affiliation can post a document or manual of their own creation, subsequently useable as standard procedure for terrorist cells.
When the government blames Iran, that tells us that it wants to put Iran in the wrong for other reasons. The Independent’s counter claim is just silly – boo to the government’s yah.
