Thinking about Margaret Beckett’s response to Saddam’s death penalty reminded me of something. I laid a bet with someone back in ’97 that New Labour would re-introduce the death penalty – or attempt to - at some stage over the course of its life in government.
I know that this is technically impossible since it contravenes various treaties to which the UK has signed up to, notably including our membership of the EU.
Treaties, shmeaties. What a perfect opportunity to be simultaneously tough on crime and tough on the causes of Europe! And what an absolute gift to the tabloids at a time of general circulation decline.
Place your hand on the shiny head of Dr Reid at the next full moon and tell me in all honesty that they’re not going to at least try it.
