According to the FT, China has added electricity generating capacity equivalent to the entire UK national grid this year alone: 85% of it is coal fired.
I remember there used to be quite a lively debate about whether China should grow it’s power capacity through environmentally sound means in the first place, which would tend to mean slower growth, or just let rip and then compensate by the use of ameliorative technology: sulphur scrubbers and the like. I think the verdict’s in.
Actually, if they're using high-sulphur coal, this might have an overall cooling effect . . . along with the crippling acid rain, but hey.
