In point of fact Williams does object to Creationism being taught in schools, he said so in a Grauniad interview a couple of years ago.

Meanwhile, it may come as a shock to Hutton that the Pope is a mildly left wing Christian Democrat, but its hardly news.

Where I think you are right is that the C of E is exerting itself rather more these days. I think thats less of a response to Dawkins/ Hitchens (mainly because I think it dates back to the 1990s) and more to do with the fact that its distinctly possible that in a few decades time there may not be a C of E. In the shorter term its believed that Williams will step down after the next Lambeth Conference this year so we can expect plenty more demagoguery from ambitious Prelates in the next few months.
