Has the British Army - or any other for that matter - ever used this method of ensuring correct posture while on parade? It’s not as bad as SS cadets being made to stand perfectly still while balancing a live hand grenade on top of their helmets but it’s getting into that territory.

Arrr! Bain't be no warrying 'bout posture when you've add your ration of grog and you be up in thar crow's nest, lookin' out for Rroyal Navy ships. No afficer be sticking pins in ye when ye've got a hook for one hand and a cutlass in the ather and a pistol between your teeth. If any lubber be tarkin abaht pasture, ye kin put him overboard to feed the sharks.
PS Aaarrrr!!
