Notices enunciating things verboten are already beginning to proliferate, and panopticons are putting in appearances . There’s a big ugly patch of waste ground just next to us which used to be a row of terraces until it was knocked down three years ago as part of Prescott’s pathfinder scheme. It’s still a bomb site and I suspect there are quite a few of them round the country suitable for memorialisation, too.
Overall, I think Labour members and supporters have internalized forthcoming defeat. This is less of a rallying cry, more of a time capsule, something to dig up and croon over when oblivion descends. Thinking on, I can imagine people growing food on that Prescottville down the road after the Cameroons have thrown us back into recession so maybe it is something of an achievement after all.
New Labour created the wasteland, the Tories will unleash the spirit of enterprise that sees it put to use. Hoorah.
