I said a few days ago that the most interesting thing about the way Google decided to confront Beijing was the way in which the wider China-involved international corporate sector would respond. Well check this out from the "homepage of the word’s business leaders". (via)
I don’t think all of what he says is wrong; I think there’s a strong element in Google’s behaviour of extracting maximum PR benefit from withdrawing - or rather, inviting Beijing to expel it, which is maybe where the other shoe’s supposed to drop – from a market in which it couldn’t hope to dominate. But describing a business as usual procedure like this as an act of war on China reads more like something you’d get on Strong China or some other local wingnut forum than in Forbes. Mind you: the writer’s a consultant, so he’s got to be worried about potential clients starting to wonder about things. Best snap ‘em into line.
I do hope you read my response to Shaun Rein's column. One thing os for sure about Shaun - he knows where his bread is buttered.
