I notice that the obituaries of Malcolm McLaren have trouble specifying what it is that he actually did, which is not surprising. In regard to punk, he didn’t do any of the actual music, Vivienne Westwood did the clothes and he never created any infrastructure in the manner of Tony Wilson. What he basically did was promote himself.
Tony Wilson’s a good comparison. Both were college situationists. Wilson took that as an injunction to actually build things that would enable people to do things other than spectate. MacLaren just made a spectacle of himself. In that sense, sad to say, he was certainly more influential.
