Radley Balko, from earlier this week:
Obama is arguing the executive has the power to execute American citizens without a trial, without even so much as an airing of the charges against them, and that it can do so in complete secrecy, with no oversight from any court, and that the families of the executed have no legal recourse.
Bad enough, but also it just occurred to me that this “right” of execution can be conducted by any means considered effective or expedient and that it extends anywhere in the world. Including here.
Apparently the State Department have issued an advisory for US citizens to avoid public places in Europe in response to alleged plans for a Mumbai style attack which were originally supposed to have been foiled by a bit of judicious flying killer robot work, or so we were told earlier in the week. Maybe it’s time the Home Office issued an advisory for British citizens to be a bit careful about standing too close to visiting Americans, collateral damage being a terrible thing and all. I mean, if the chosen means was an AC130 and the chosen venue Deansgate on a Saturday afternoon, then it’s pink mist all over.
Better yet, maybe it’s time that someone in the government told Obama that if he wants to have his own citizens whacked then there’s nothing we can do about that. But he can whack them somewhere else.
