Though I'm not entirely convinced by some of the logical chains in the hypothesis in the linked-to interview.

Well one of my guesses was feminine hygiene product. (The other was dating/sex chat line though I'd expect the phone number to be more prominent).

I guessed as soon as I saw the picture, without looking at the characters, but that's because those kind of ads are super-common here.
Also, the book under discussion is excellent.
