When I saw this story a few days ago, I thought it was one of those only in China classics. Now I'm wondering if it's a Terrible Warning of What Lies Ahead For Us. It ties in with that British Social Attitudes survey released last week, too.

On the other hand, it does look more or less exactly like the first day of the January Sales on Oxford St. So - entirely traditional behaviour in some non Chinese cultures.....

Just went to that Don McCullin exhibition at the IWM (it's very good) - it includes one of his photos of coal pickers in the north of England.
At least people aren't out in the winter scavenging for spilt coal to keep their houses warm any more. That was the Sixties; not that long ago.
